Blood Supply of Cervical Spinal Cord in Man

The blood supply of rat spinal nerve roots was investigated using a variety of methods, including preparation of vascular casts with Microfil, alkaline phosphatase histochemistry and Epon embedding for light and electron microscopy. Dorsal and ventral roots were sampled and portions from the spinal cord, dorsal root ganglia and peripheral nerve were taken for comparison. There were two different types of vessels in the roots; the large extrinsic radicular and the minute intrinsic vessels of the nerve root parenchyma. The radicular vessels follow a straight course along the longitudinal axis of both ventral and dorsal roots. Their diameter appears to vary in different topographical regions. They are united with the longitudinal spinal cord arteries and are a major source of arterial supply to the spinal cord.

The brain is an amazing three-pound organ that controls all functions of the body, interprets information from the outside world, and embodies the essence of the mind and soul. Intelligence, creativity, emotion, and memory are a few of the many things governed by the brain. Protected within the skull, the brain is composed of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The brain receives information through our five senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing - often many at one time. It assembles the messages in a way that has meaning for us, and can store that information in our memory.

Anatomy of the circulation of the brain and spinal cord

Neuroscience in Medicine pp Cite as. The human brain is a highly metabolic organ with no effective mechanism of storage of oxygen and glucose. The brain needs a constant supply of large amounts of blood, and blood flow is auto-regulated by brain. The vasculature of the brain and spinal cord consists of an arterial input, intervening capillaries, and a venous drainage system. There are no lymphatic vessels in the central nervous system CNS. NCBI Bookshelf. Sunderland MA : Sinauer Associates; The entire blood supply of the brain and spinal cord depends on two sets of branches from the dorsal aorta. The vertebral arteries arise from the subclavian arteries, and the internal carotid arteries are branches of the common carotid arteries. The vertebral arteries and the ten medullary arteries that arise from segmental branches of the aorta provide the primary vascularization of the spinal cord. These medullary arteries join to form the anterior and posterior spinal arteries Figure 1. If any of the medullary arteries are obstructed or damaged during abdominal surgery, for example , the blood supply to specific parts of the spinal cord may be compromised.

The central nervous system, like any system of the body, requires constant oxygenation and nourishment. It is also very sensitive to oxygen deprivation, with ischemic cell death resulting within minutes. These arteries arise in the neck, and ascend to the cranium. Within the cranial vault, the terminal branches of these arteries form an anastomotic circle, called the Circle of Willis.

The CNS is crucial to the operation of the body, and any compromise in the brain and spinal cord can lead to severe difficulties. The CNS has a privileged blood supply, as suggested by the blood-brain barrier. The function of the tissue in the CNS is crucial to the survival of the organism, so the contents of the blood cannot simply pass into the central nervous tissue. To protect this region from the toxins and pathogens that may be traveling through the blood stream, there is strict control over what can move out of the general systems and into the brain and spinal cord. Because of this privilege, the CNS needs specialized structures for the maintenance of circulation.

The medulla oblongata or simply medulla is a long stem-like structure which makes up the lower part of the brainstem. It is a cone-shaped neuronal mass responsible for autonomic involuntary functions, ranging from vomiting to sneezing. During embryonic development, the medulla oblongata develops from the myelencephalon. The myelencephalon is a secondary vesicle which forms during the maturation of the rhombencephalon , also referred to as the hindbrain.
