An industrial robot is a robot system used for manufacturing. Industrial robots are automated, programmable and capable of movement on three or more axes.
One of the most important application areas for automation technology is manufacturing. To many people, automation means manufacturing automation. In this section, the types of automation are defined, and examples of automated systems used in manufacturing are described. Three types of automation in production can be distinguished: 1 fixed automation, 2 programmable automation, and 3 flexible automation. In effect, the programmed commands are contained in the machines in the form of cams, gears, wiring, and other hardware that is not easily changed over from one product style to another. This form of automation is characterized by high initial investment and high production rates. It is therefore suitable for products that are made in large volumes.
The Robotics and Automation Handbook addresses the major aspects of designing, fabricating, and enabling robotic systems and their various applications. It presents kinetic and dynamic methods for analyzing robotic systems, considering factors such as force and torque. From these analyses, the book develops several controls approaches, including servo actuation, hybrid control, and trajectory planning.

Automation describes a wide range of technologies that reduce human intervention in processes. Human intervention is reduced by predetermining decision criteria, subprocess relationships, and related actions — and embodying those predeterminations in machines. Automation, or automatic control , includes the use of various control systems for operating equipment such as machinery , processes in factories , boilers , and heat-treating ovens , switching on telephone networks , steering , and stabilization of ships , aircraft , and other applications and vehicles with reduced human intervention.
Driven by an explosion in information systems over the past two decades, robotics as a discipline has rapidly evolved from the far-flung fantasies of science fiction to a practical, daily necessity of modern industry. Robotics, Automation, and Control in Industrial and Service Settings meets the challenges presented by the rise of ubiquitous computing by providing a detailed discussion of best practices and future developments in the field. This premier reference source offers a comprehensive overview of current research and emerging theory for a diverse and multidisciplinary audience of students, educators, professionals, and policymakers. This reference work includes research and perspectives from scholars and top industry practitioners in fields such as manufacturing, assistive robotics, bioinformatics, human-computer interaction, and intelligent mechatronics, among others. Contributed by an international group of engineers and other researchers, the 11 articles in this volume discuss applications of advanced robotics, automation, and control in industrial and service settings.
The robotics controller is an integral part of the machine control application. For machine developers, it makes no difference whether they have to integrate a single motion control axis or an entire robot into the machine. Since the robot no longer requires a dedicated controller, all interfaces between the machine and the robot are eliminated.
