The documentary hypothesis DH is one of the models historically used by biblical scholars to explain the origins and composition of the Torah or Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible: Genesis , Exodus , Leviticus , Numbers , and Deuteronomy. All agree that the Torah is not a unified work from a single author, but is made up of sources combined over many centuries by many hands. The documentary hypothesis posited that the Pentateuch is a compilation of four originally independent documents: the Jahwist J , Elohist E , Deuteronomist D , and Priestly P sources. The first of these, J, was dated to the Solomonic period c. A version of the documentary hypothesis, frequently identified with the German scholar Julius Wellhausen , was almost universally accepted for most of the 20th century, but the consensus has now collapsed.

Yahwist source , abbreviated as J , labeled J after the German transliteration of YHWH , an early source that provides a strand of the Pentateuchal narrative. The basis for identifying a strand of the Pentateuch as the writing of the Yahwist—the Yahwist strand being represented specifically in Genesis 2—16, 18—22, 24—34, 38, and 49; Exodus 1—24, 32, and 34; Numbers 11—12, 14, and 20—25; and Judges 1—is not only the use of the name Yahweh for God but also the use of Yahweh in association with other indications. One can see examples of these different sources when comparing similar biblical stories. There are other places in which the biblical narrative covers the same ground two or more times. This event is reported between Abraham and Pharaoh over Sarah —20 , with Abraham and Abimelekh over Sarah —18 , and with Isaac and Abimelekh over Rebekah —

However, this notion has changed throughout history. Over hundreds of years, many strong cases had been made as to why Moses could not have been the author of the Pentateuch. Compiling all the knowledge of his predecessors, Julius Wellhausen formulated the Documentary Hypotheses as a theory as what groups of people composed the Torah.

The argument proceeds from the Documentary Hypothesis in modern biblical studies. This hypothesis is based on the assumption that the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament were written by four different authors at different times. These authors are known as J, P, E and D.

Source criticism sometimes referred to as literary criticism tries to identify the sources upon which a text relies; it bears some relation to the stemmatic approach to textual criticism. Source criticism emerged out of work done on the Old Testament — particularly the book of Genesis — by French scholar Jean Anstruc and later by German scholar Julius Wellhausen , pictured.
