Limitations in Piaget’s Equilibration Account

Jean Piaget was a Swiss developmental psychologist who studied children in the early 20th century. His theory of intellectual or cognitive development , published in , is still used today in some branches of education and psychology. It focuses on children, from birth through adolescence, and characterizes different stages of development, including:. They also include goals children should achieve as they move through a given stage. The sensorimotor stage covers children ages birth to 18—24 months old.

The 4 Stages of Cognitive Development

Piaget believed that our present knowledge has evolved over time. The desire to learn and know is built in from infancy. The basic concepts within our knowledge such as in mathematics and science have been constructed over generations. Piaget's theory provides a description of the processes of human developments that are involved from infancy to adult hood. The concept of cognitive structure in humans is central to Piaget's theory. Cognitive structures are patterns of physical or mental action that underlie specific acts of intelligence. These patterns correspond with stages of child development.

Cognition refers to thinking and memory processes, and cognitive development refers to long-term changes in these processes. One of the most widely known perspectives about cognitive development is the cognitive stage theory of a Swiss psychologist named Jean Piaget. Piaget created and studied an account of how children and youth gradually become able to think logically and scientifically. Because his theory is especially popular among educators, we focus on it in this chapter. The to-and-fro of these two processes leads not only to short-term learning, but also to long-term developmental change.

Jean Piaget - Intellectual Development

Piaget's theory of cognitive development and epistemological view are together called " genetic epistemology ". Piaget placed great importance on the education of children. As the Director of the International Bureau of Education , he declared in that "only education is capable of saving our societies from possible collapse, whether violent, or gradual.

By Dr. Saul McLeod , updated December 07, Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that intelligence changes as children grow. A child's cognitive development is not just about acquiring knowledge, the child has to develop or construct a mental model of the world. Cognitive development occurs through the interaction of innate capacities and environmental events, and children pass through a series of stages. Piaget's stages are:.

Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that children move through four different stages of mental development. His theory focuses not only on understanding how children acquire knowledge, but also on understanding the nature of intelligence. As kids interact with the world around them, they continually add new knowledge, build upon existing knowledge, and adapt previously held ideas to accommodate new information. Piaget was born in Switzerland in the late s and was a precocious student, publishing his first scientific paper when he was just 11 years old. His early exposure to the intellectual development of children came when he worked as an assistant to Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon as they worked to standardize their famous IQ test.

This paper discusses theoretical and epistemological problems concerning validity of psychological science in the context of latent constructs. I consider the use of latent constructs as one reason for the replicability crisis. At the moment, there exist different constructs describing the same psychological phenomena side by side, and different psychological phenomena that are reflected by the same latent construct. To overcome this problem, I suggest a shift of theoretical and epistemological perspective on latent constructs.
