Youth unemployment in Europe and the world: Causes, consequences and solutions

Youth unemployment is the situation of young people who are looking for a job, but cannot find a job , with the age range being that defined by the United Nations as 15—24 years old. An unemployed person is defined as someone who does not have a job but is actively seeking work. The era of high employment has taken a sharp downward turn. The U. Employee layoffs are now measured in the hundreds of thousands. Many of these employees were entry-level workers just starting their careers. The Labor Department's statistics on teenage and young adult employment reflect a substantial rise in unemployment rates. With unemployment rising in nearly every community, there is a compelling question before us: what are the long-term effects of unemployment spells?

It is clear that youth unemployment leads to many negative outcomes in terms of both material and mental wellbeing. There is also evidence of greater mental health problems in their 40s or 50s. So the impacts of current high levels of youth unemployment will be felt by society for decades. There are lots of problems with analysing the causes and effects of such long-term scarring and the reasons for it appear inter-connected. For instance wellbeing and mental health may affect subsequent income and chances of getting and keeping a job, but are themselves influenced by unemployment.

The Effects of Youth Unemployment: A Review of the Literature

The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of financial crises on the youth unemployment rate YUR. After a review of the existing theoretical and empirical literature on the determinants of the YUR in general and at the occurrence of economic crises, the authors present empirical estimations on the impact of past financial crises on young workers. The inclusion of many control variables — including in particular GDP growth — does not change the sign and significance of the key explanatory variable. The results suggest that financial crises affect the YUR for five years after the onset of the crises; however, the most adverse effects are found in the second and third year after the financial crisis.

Young adults and teenagers are engaged in work on a much smaller scale than older workers. Young people are engaged less in work because they are still in school, or they are involved in leisure activities. Some, on the other hand, would like to work, but find it difficult obtaining employment. The transition from school to employment is a process that involves searching and changing jobs before deciding on a more or less permanent employment.

Толпа стала еще плотнее, а улица шире. Они двигались уже не по узкому боковому притоку, а по главному руслу.
