The article investigates the work of cultural difference in language in the context of translation, specifically as an effect of translation processes within postcolonial literature, and its role in reinforcing postcolonial literature as the world literature in English. Delineating the space of postcolonial literature as that of primary translation, the article investigates how cultural difference travels in interlingual translation of postcolonial literature from English to Polish. Cultural difference is, thus, the substance of postcolonial literature and nothing less than translation in progress. Basic features of postcolonial literature: resistance Boehmer , counter-discourse Ashcroft et al. The article proposes to study interlingual translation of postcolonial literature in connection with its paradoxical status of a monolingual English-dominated literature, in which cultural difference works as a spectral presence of other languages.

Post-colonial translation : theory and practice

It is clear from the reading, and even more so when one listens to the author telling a story, exactly how difficult the translation process really is. The result is original and often startling. These capacities in turn reflect back on interlingual translation itself, illuminating aspects of its own revolutionary potential and its powers of cultural transformation. In straddling two cultures, postcolonial writers, like translators, mediate cultural difference by means of a common variety of techniques. On the textual level, for example, both postcolonial texts and translations often show deviations from the standard receiving language: perturbations in lexis including imported lexical items, unusual collocations, non-standard frequency distributions, variant semantic fields and neologisms , unusual syntax and defamiliarized language, including unexpected metaphors and unusual turns of speech. Moreover, the unfamiliar cultural substrata in both types of writing give rise to a heavy information load, which both authors and translators relieve by inserting explanations or by supplying cultural information that would normally be presupposed or implicit in other literary works. Thus, postcolonial writing and translation are both more explicit than other types of literary writing see Baker

Postcolonial Translation: Theory and Practice

This chapter looks at the increased visibility of the translator in the twenty-first century and traces two parallel lines of thinking about translation, both of which focus on the unequal power relations between cultures. Postcolonial scholarship has been primarily concerned with cultural translation, that is, translation understood figuratively as movement between cultures, and has had less regard for language issues, while translation studies has emphasized the complexity of translation as a linguistic practice that involves intercultural mediation. The time has come for dialogue between these two strands of thought, and for recognition of the importance of translation as not only a fundamental aspect of contemporary communication, but also a major shaping force in literary history around the world. Сквозь строй не позволял мне загрузить этот файл, поэтому я обошел фильтры.  - Глаза коммандера, сузившись, пристально смотрели на Чатрукьяна.  - Ну, что еще - до того как вы отправитесь домой.
