The Harvard model claims to be comprehensive in as much as it seeks to comprise six critical components of HRM.

There are many similarities with the Harvard 'map' but the Michigan model has a harder, less humanistic edge, holding that employees are resources in the same way as any other business resource. People have to be managed in a similar manner to equipment and raw materials. They must be obtained as cheaply as possible, used sparingly, and developed and exploited as much as possible. The Michigan model is also known as the 'matching model' or 'best-fit' approach to human resource management. In essence, it requires that human resource strategies have a tight fit to the overall strategies of the business. As such, it limits the role of HR to a reactive, organizational function and under-emphasizes the importance of societal and other external factors.

Human resource management HRM has frequently been described as a concept with two distinct forms: soft and hard. The soft model emphasizes individuals and their self-direction and places commitment, trust, and self-regulated behaviour at the centre of any strategic approach to people. In contrast, the hard model stresses the rationalism of strategic fit and places emphasis on performance management and an instrumental approach to the management of individuals. This chapter first analyzes the conflicts and tensions both between and within the soft and hard models. It then reports on the findings of an in-depth empirical study which allow us to review and challenge the theoretical foundations upon which the soft and hard models are based.
